ELEPHANT CORRIDOR, CULTURAL TRIANGLE, SRI LANKA

Recommended

Stay at Elephant Corridor and you’ll feel you’ve been transported into the middle of an African savannah, surrounded by lush green plains, misty blue hills and free-roaming wildlife.

A brand-new luxury eco-project designed to leave the local habitat undisturbed and allow animals to wander unimpeded through its 200-acre grounds, it’s also a hi-tech 24-suite boutique hotel offering guests a chance to go back to nature in style, as well as making the perfect base from which to explore the fascinating ancient sites of the Cultural Triangle.

The grounds incorporate a water tank where elephants regularly come to bathe, along with sports facilities, Ayurvedic Spa, large outdoor pool and ‘jungle bar‘. The roomy and elegant suites are equipped with all the latest mod-cons plus a huge picture window, private terrace and plunge pool.  There are 21 individual ochre-walled-cabin suites, roofed with red tiles or straw, each with its own private terrace and royal-blue-tiled plunge pool. They range through ‘Deluxe‘, ‘Super Deluxe’ and ‘Romantic’ up to ‘Royal’ and ‘Presidential‘. All are high-ceilinged, spacious and elegantly designed, with a lilac blue, corn and grey colour scheme, one boulder rock wall and a wide picture window looking out onto the terrace and wildlife-rich savannah beyond.

There are lots of lovely personal touches too. You’re welcomed into your suite with a prayer-offering of coconut fronds and lit oil lamp in a little alcove by your door (called Gokkola, it’s a traditional warder-off of evil in these parts, along with the devil-dancing masks), plus a big complimentary basket of fruit and small packet of sweet biscuits. Your name is painted on a pennant hoisted by your door and on your cotton key fob (though you can be anonymous if you prefer), and when your bed is turned down ‘Goodnight‘ is sweetly spelt out in leaves upon your bed.

Every room is also kitted out with tea and coffee-making facilities, mini-bar and 21-inch satellite TV and DVD player and surround sound CD, kimonos, mozzie-repellent vaporizers, binoculars and an easel for those who want to do some sketching.
