Dugong Lodge is accessed by Vilanculos airport situated on the Mozambican coast some two-hours from Johannesburg by daily scheduled flights. Transfers from Vilanculos to Dugong lodge are by boat or in a 6-seater island hopper aircraft. Accommodation is in 10 luxury-tented cottages built on elevated decks, with en-suite bathrooms, overlooking the beach. Each tented cottage is shaded by a grass and thatched roof. The central building, with bar and good restaurant, spill out on to mahogany decking affording lovely views over the Indian Ocean. The cuisine is influenced by the tropical island setting with an abundance of fresh seafood prepared in both Mozambican and European styles. This is a pleasant and peaceful lodge with plenty to do or just relax and enjoy the isolation, sun and sea. |
The lodge is situated in a nature reserve and marine sanctuary. This diverse eco-system of bush and wetland, with its powder white beaches and crystal clear water is host to a magnificent array of fish, dolphins, sea horses, 5 species of turtles, Manta Rays and the endangered but inquisitive Dugong. There are over 300 species of birds including the charismatic Mangrove Kingfisher, Crab Plover and African Fish Eagle.
Snorkel in front of the lodge or scuba dive on the famous two-mile reef. For the fishing enthusiast, the offshore Archipelago is famous for its marlin fishing, and the island also offers both fresh water and sea fly-fishing.
