Cocoa Island, Makunufushi, Maldives

Recommended

Cocoa Island is a private island resort located in the less developed South Malé Atoll, a 40-minute speedboat ride from Malé international airport.  On the west side of the island lies the Kandooma Channel, considered to be one of the best dive sites in the Maldives; on the other side is a quiet reef for snorkelling flanked by a curl of rockless beach which tapers into a spit of sand. This is as long as the island, disappearing with the advance of the Maldivian tide.

The accommodation is laid out to maximise privacy and consisits of thatched overwater villas and suites inspired by dhoni boats, as used by local fishermen, joined by simple wooden walkways to the island. Each is discreet and self-contained. From their room, guests walk out onto a private terrace, and from the terrace, slip into the warm sea.  All suites and villas are equipped with king size beds, air conditioning, and all modern amenities. The view from the wide platform bed is directly out to the open sea, and the bathrooms, all with double sinks, a bath and shower, share the horizon views.

On the island, guests' facilities include a library, an infinity pool, and a comfortable all-day lounge offering Internet access, flatscreen TV and media player as well as books and magazines.  The on-site watersports centre includes a fully equipped Dive Centre and a gym with yoga facilities. There is also a COMO Shambhala Retreat offering a full range of treatments including massages, Ayurveda and facials, and facilities such as massage pavilions, hydrotherapy pool, steam rooms and meditation area.

The cuisine at the Ufaa Retaurant is a delicious blend of Indian and Sri Lankan influences with an emphasis on locally caught seafood.
