Claremont House, Canterbury, South Island, New Zealand

Recommended

Built in 1866 and now listed by the New Zealand Historic Places Trust, this luxuriously appointed country homestead is situated in the foothills of the Southern Alps amidst some of New Zealand’s most spectacular countryside. It is immediately surrounded by a 1600 acre estate farming deer, sheep and
cattle and is at the heart of the Waipara wine country.

The property has been lovingly restored and is secluded, elegant and spacious with mature gardens,
vine-clad verandahs and stunning views. There is a spa pool in the garden and swimming in the nearby river. Stay more than two nights and be taken on a complimentary 4 x 4 outback safari tour of the unique geological features of the nearby Waipara valley.

Just four suites make up the guest accommodation. All have beautiful views over the garden or the orchard to the mountains beyond. The bedrooms are individually designed using antique furniture and fittings, and top quality fabrics. They have en-suite bathrooms with large claw-foot baths, separate showers, heated towel rails and large de-mist mirrors. There are two guest living rooms featuring fine antiques, elegant soft furnishings, open fireplaces and a well-stocked library. The living rooms open onto shady verandahs or sunny cobbled courtyards.
