Chitabe Walking Trails, Okavango Delta, Botswana

Recommended

Walking on safari has always been regarded as the finest way to really get a feel for the African wilderness. Chitabe Walking Trails Camp, operated between the 1st of May and the 30th of September, is set in one of the Okavango's best areas for walking and allows visitors to get truly “close to nature” during a two night trail. Walkers are accompanied by an armed and licensed "accredited" guide who will take them on informative and adventurous walks through the different habitats of the Okavango Delta. You will walk for several hours a day, split between 3 – 4 hours in the early morning and a shorter time in the afternoon, but it is done at a moderate pace and can be enjoyed by most guests, with plenty of time for quality game viewing and birding on foot. The Trail is completely tailor made to each group of guests and the amount of walking can be increased or decreased to suit the group. Vehicle back up is available should guests prefer to do a mixture of walking and driving. There is plenty of opportunity to rest in the heat of the day. Evening meals are cooked over an open fire and eaten around an elegant dining table set out under the stars.

Nights are spent sleeping out at two of the hides located in the Chitabe Reserve area. Both hides accommodate guests on elevated platforms with each person sleeping in the hide under a mosquito net with a brilliant view of the spectacular African night sky. Chemical toilets and hot bucket showers will provide the ablution facilities. The hides are located in very different habitats. One is situated on the edge of a floodplain that often contains water and enables one to experience the wet side of the Okavango and listen to its distinctive night sounds. The other is set within the woodland on the edge of an extensive pan system, which often sees an abundance of elephant activity. The experience of absolute silence - except for the nocturnal sounds of the Okavango's insects and wildlife - that can be had by sleeping "out in the bush", is magical and one that all guests will mark as a highlight of their African safari.
