Blue Mountains Private Safaris - Australia

The Best

Camping under the stars in style - eat well, sleep well and adventure well.

For many years the gorges and escarpments of the Blue Mountains proved an impenetrable barrier to early settlers - today they harbour a spectacular World Heritage listed wilderness on Sydney’s doorstep, with wildlife, historical sites and great bush walks. Blue Mountains Private Safaris guides are locals whose knowledge of the region’s mountain tracks and the wildlife habitats is second to none. Away from the well trodden tourist paths of the Katoomba area, a private safari with a touch of ‘Wild Bush Luxury’ gives a very natural insight to one of Australia’s most beautiful regions.

The living area is a simple canvas and timber structure on the sandy floor of the riverbank and includes a small reference library. After a day of fishing, canoeing, bushwalking or exploring by 4WD, kick back with a cold beer or a chilled glass of wine and watch the sun set. Your guide will be happy to chat about the days events as he sets the dining table on the bank of the river. As you nibble canapés and help yourself to another drink he will prepare a delicious meal - perhaps a traditional camp-oven roast or seafood BBQ followed by a sweet treat. Afterwards relax around the campfire in your own private wilderness - the sounds of Australia’s mostly nocturnal wildlife are all around.

Accommodation

This is a wilderness camping experience and as such is very simple.  The aim is to ensure you eat well, sleep well and enjoy fine Australian wines, friendly hospitality and expert guiding.

  • The three accommodation pavilions consist of swags (a bed roll with fine linen, thick mattresses and warm duvet) on a timber platform
  • Each has an en suite camp shower and eco-loo which are surrounded by canvas but open to the sky
  • The living area is a simple canvas and timber structure on the sandy floor of the riverbank
  • Small reference library in camp
Dining

Full breakfasts & excellent morning and afternoon teas, with muffins and homemade cakes.  Picnic lunches with camp chairs and tables, a steak cooked over an open fire & fresh salad & fruits.  Dinner may be a full roast dinner followed by desert.  There will always be good wine, cold beer, soft drinks and tea and coffee available.

Children

Children of all ages are welcome and our guides will tailor activities to suit their interests and abilities.

Activities

With your swag camp as a base, the southern Blue Mountains provide some of the best walking country in Australia, as well as some outstanding nature experiences: wildlife watching, historic and deserted settlements, fly fishing, limestone cave formations, precipitous waterfalls and rugged 4WD tracks.

  • Wildlife Viewing - the valleys and slopes of the mountains harbour an extraordinary variety of wildlife. Kangaroos, wallaroos, wombats, echidnas, koalas, Red-necked Wallabies, Brushtail Possums, platypus, goannas and numerous bird species are all possible sightings. Afternoon tea with the wombats is always a highlight.
  • Canoeing - the river provides easy canoeing for families and more energetic canoeists alike, as well as the chance to spot an elusive platypus.
  • Yerranderie - a 1,000 acre private heritage property surrounded by the national park, that was once a thriving silver mining town, offers a fascinating look into the region’s pioneering history.
  • Bush Walking - the southern section of the National Park combines some spectacular and rarely visited country with some of the greatest bush walking territory in Australia, for both day trips around the camp and longer overland walking expeditions. The latter include Bonnum Pic, Kanangra Walls, Yerranderie and the Kowmung River.
  • 4WD Safaris - explore the old stock routes and tracks of the Blue Mountains by Toyota Landcruiser. For the less active this provides the chance to go off the beaten track in some comfort.
  • Fishing - our guides are fishing specialists and happy to teach anyone how to cast a line. For the more serious fly fisherman, we can arrange access to the best trout water within reach of Sydney.
  • Helicopter flights - viewing the expanses of eucalypt forest and sheer sandstone escarpments from the air provides a unique perspective on the area and a great way to escape the city in speed and style.

The guides ... armed with a sense of humour, a degree in environmental science and years of experience traversing the Blue Mountains on foot and by car, Mark Tickner is a passionate naturalist and fly fisherman. All of Blue Mountains Private Safaris’ trips are private, however, if more than 6 people are travelling, Mark brings in a second guide to ensure that clients receive the attention and support required in an exclusive bush safari.

Location

We highly recommend the helicopter flight from Sydney; it takes about 40 minutes and includes spectacular Blue Mountains scenery.  At an extra cost a scenic flight over Sydney Harbour can be included.  Your pilot and the helicopter will stay on the ground with you. Road transfers from / to Sydney can be arranged. Self-drive travellers can meet our guides at Joadja Vineyard which is near Bowral, about 90 minutes drive from Sydney.
