Along the Mozambique channel lies the tropical Bazaruto Archipelago and Benguerra Island. It is here that Benguerra Island Lodge - merged into a natural milkwood forest and encircled by silver beaches and turquoise seas - offers an exclusive African island experience. The lodge is small and intimate with personalised and individual service. The island is wonderfully peaceful and offers a pristine natural environment, which is also a National Park, to explore. Watersports available include snorkelling, diving, deep sea fishing and sailing, and best of all... totally unpopulated beaches. Sunsets, peace and contentment are a reality at Benguerra; totally unspoilt; totally unique. This is one of our favourite beach lodges in Africa and you will not be disappointed. Accommodation The lodge is situated on the protected north west of the island and offers a variety of beach front accommodation. 2 Bungalows. Set back into the indigenous milkwood forest, each Bungalow has a Sea-view and is no more than 15m from the beach. They have no windows or doors and the sea breeze moves quietly and freely through all the rooms. Blinds are hung on the windows and can be drawn for enhanced privacy. Bungalows have overhead fans, en-suite bathrooms with showers, and mosquito nets over the beds. 2 Cabanas. Built right on the edge of the beach. Romantic and elegant, the suites offer guests the chance to experience the ultimate island getaway. Each has a King-sized bed, large bathroom with bath, shower and outdoor shower, mosquito net and overhead fan, private deck with jacuzzi/plunge pool, hammocks and sun loungers, mini-bar, and tea & coffee making facilities. 10 Casitas. A home away from home, where the eco conscious traveller can relax and enjoy spacious and luxurious comforts, the Casitas embrace Benguerra’s unique blend of safari chic and Arabic style. Each Casita has a King size bed with mosquito net, tastefully appointed lounge area, 100m2 of private timber deck with plunge pool, and an outdoor dining gazebo for starlit dinners. The Villa. Luxury furnishings and private facilities make the villa an ideal place for those wanting unsurpassed comfort and privacy. It has 2 double bedrooms, mosquito nets and overhead fans, en-suite bathrooms with bath and shower, an intimate lounge and dining area fitted with hand carved mahogany furniture, a private wooden deck with a swimming pool, and a private garden with beach access. A personal chef prepares all meals, although the main lodge's dining facilities are also available to Villa guests, if desired.
Main Lodge Swimming pool and small spa, reception, art and gift shop, large sitting room and bar with inside and outside seating areas, dining room and library. Cuisine Freshly caught fish, calamari and crab are tantalisingly prepared together with exotic Portuguese dishes and Afro/European fare. Meals are served in different settings from the hotel stoep, in your room, on a verandah, at the beach or on a dhow. One of the lodge's specialities is its fine "Castaway" picnics which are often taken in the sand dunes, on a remote part of the coastline or on adjacent deserted islands.
