Bayethe Lodge is one of the 6 lodges on the Shamwari Game Reserve. This private, malaria free reserve of 49,000 acres is situated in verdant bush along the Bushmans River, halfway between Port Elizabeth and Grahamstown. Shamwari is about conserving a vanishing way of life and boasts five eco-systems, thus enabling the support of many forms of plant, animal and bird life. Bayethe is a splendid stone walled and thatch roofed lodge and offers the ultimate in luxury, tented accommodation. Accommodation consists of 9 tents of canvas and pole under thatch construction that are nestled along the bed of the river, camouflaged under trees allowing ample privacy and unsurpassed comforts. Each tent is air-conditioned and heated and has an en-suite bathroom, shower, private plunge pool and viewing deck. Early morning and evening game viewing drives in open land rovers as well as guided nature walks and bird watching are all part of the lively lodge experience. Each game vehicle has a trained ranger with a vast knowledge of both the flora and fauna on the reserve. As well as the game activities, guests at Shamwari are also able to see some of the rescued animals, including big cats, at the Born Free Foundation Animal Rescue and Education Centre. The lodge serves excellent meals for its guests and offers a selection of fine South African wines from its cellar.
