Situated in the Seoni District of Madhya Pradesh, Pench National Park is dominated by hills, forests and valleys created by the Pench River which meanders through the Park. Bagh Van (meaning Tiger Forest) is a wonderful new lodge, hidden away on the thickly wooded banks of a seasonal stream which, in the dry season, serves as a pathway for tiger, leopard and other animals inhabiting the fringe of the dry deciduous forest of mostly teak trees. The lodge is small and intimate with spacious cottage suites, a large bedroom, a dressing area, an excellent bathroom and a private verandah. In addition stairs lead to a Machan or covered jungle rooftop platform complete with insect netting, overhead fan and hookah pipes for sleep outs on hot nights. Having been thoughtfully positioned and well spread out, privacy at each cottage is assured. There is a main dining room where you may eat separately or all together (the food is delicious) and a sitting area with a small library. The terraced area outside boasts a camp fire which is a cosy place to sit and discuss the day’s activities with a large drink in hand. The naturalists are young, professional, friendly and enthusiastic yet have a very responsible approach to wildlife tourism. This responsible approach filters the whole way down through the running and operating of the camp which has a strong eco focus, funds local village projects, and encourages the villagers to get as involved as possible. Bagh Van owns its own jeeps which are amongst the best to be found and they have been specially designed for the lodge. Pench Tiger Reserve is one of the more recent parks to open to tourism so the wildlife is incredibly varied and visible as it is so unused to intruders. A very beautiful area, much of the vegetation comprises teak forest and open grassland in undulating terrain, at the foot of the Satpura Range. Drained by the Pench and Wainganga Rivers, it is a green and fertile area for several months of the year and provides a perfect habitat for over 22 species of mammal, including tiger, leopard, dhol (Indian Wild Dog), wolf, hyena, jackal and jungle cat. The prey species comprise of chital, sambhar, muntjac, gaur, wild boar, langur and rhesus macaques. There is a rich birdlife with over 300 recorded bird species. Fascinating birds include parakets, hornbills, kingfisher, barbets, minivets, orioles, wagtails, and a host of raptors including the crested serpent eagle, crested hawk eagle and white-eyed buzzard.
