The Boulder Garden is a remarkable eco-tourist hotel. Hand built into, under and around a slew of gigantic boulders in the Sinharaja Rainforest. The 10 suites are arranged in 4 rising tiers, linked by winding stone steps and deep corridors. Some rooms are quite far from the central areas. Roomy and very clean, they have an almost monastic feel, thanks to their rock walls, metal-barred windows, big timber beams and polished cement floors. Also probably because they remain cool in the heat of the day. Delicious food is served in the open-air restaurant situated beneath one of the largest boulder - it’s not unlike dining under the prow of a ship. There’s also a cave bar and spring-water swimming pool nestled in the shady, quiet and luxurious surroundings. We like this place a lot.
There are 12 rock-walled suites, 4 with private balconies and 2 with their own Jacuzzis. Each has its own design but all have the same blue, brown and grey colour scheme, with tree-trunk beams, roomy blue-and-white tiled bathrooms with European stainless steel fittings, large, bulb-lined vanity mirrors, cavernous wall cupboards…and the odd jutting boulder. Many of the soft furnishings and fixtures and have been designed and chosen by Ram’s wife Sheree and include wall-mounted carriage lamps, pressed-flower papier mache lampshades, white cotton sheets, rope and canvas chairs, and wrought iron and tree-bole bedsteads. All suites have tea and coffee-making facilities, mini bars, (sadly TVs, videos & DVDs). Each suite is named after the particular type of local stone (Basalt, Hornfell, Skarn) hand-quarried, broken and carried uphill. There two cave rooms, which are just that - natural rock caves equipped with a basic bed, chair and loo. They’re open to the wind but shelter you from rain.
