Azura, Benguerra Island, Mozambique

Highly Recommended

Azura is located just off the Mozambique coast within the Bazaruto Marine National Park on Benguerra, an unspoilt island of deserted pure white sand beaches, sparkling turquoise seas, swaying palms and sunny days. Away from the island's beaches, towering sand dunes give way to indigenous bush abundant with local flora and fauna and an interesting variety of birdlife.  Offshore are magnificent reefs for diving and snorkelling, while the surrounding seas are home to migrating whales, dolphins, and the elusive and protected dugong along with marlin, sailfish and tuna to tempt the sportsfishermen.

Azura's accommodation is designed in the traditional Mozambican style and consists of 16 thatched villas of varying sizes, including a two-bedroomed family suite and a huge Presidential Suite with extra space and bedrooms for guests' staff.  All villas have beach frontage, private plunge pools, shaded terraces, a sundeck and beachside sala and fully ensuite bathrooms with indoor and outdoor showers, as well as air conditioning and all modern amenities and services.

The public areas are on the beach and have ample space for relaxing, reading or taking a snack.  The restaurant cuisine combines local ingredients and contemporary style, with an emphasis on local fresh fish and seafood.  Where possible, dinner is taken on the beach by candlelight beneath the spectacular Mozambican night sky.

Many activities are water based especially scuba diving, snorkelling,  big game and salt water fly fishing or cruises on the lodge's deluxe 40 foot dhow. On land there are landrover tours of the island to take in the fauna and flora and experience the local culture. Long walks are possible including dune climbing, and the lodge will meet guests with a picnic.  For the less active, there is a lodge spa on the beach offering treatments based on local ingredients and traditions.
