Amangalla is a smart "new" hotel that lies within the walls of Galle Fort, a World Heritage Site. It has been created out of refurbished buildings, some dating back 400 years, that were formerly the military headquarters for the Dutch and then the British.
A variety of rooms, "chambers" and suites have been cleverly arranged in the old buildings and in the adjoining gardens to provide comfortable accommodation that is full of period charm. Original features such as balconies, french windows, chandeliers and ancient polished teak floorboards have been retained and lovingly restored. All the accommodation has been supplied with original antique furniture (four-poster beds, writing desks, planter's chairs, pettagama chests, etc, etc) and careful reproductions, as well as all-modern ensuite bathroom facilities in keeping with the character of the buildings. Public areas have similarly been lovingly restored to provide a lofty entrance hall with a wonderful colonial feel and a cool verandah on the tree-lined street front, a well-stocked library with reading terrace and a dining room furnished with period chairs and tables, crisp white linen and antique silverware. In the gardens are a secluded meditation pavilion and a swimming pool bordered by a terrace containing five shaded cabanas. The pièce de résistance of the recreational facilities is the Amangalla Baths, a series of relaxing treatment rooms and therapy halls containing saunas, hydrotherapy, water massage and plunge pools, a beauty salon and a traditional barber's shop. The Dining Room provides an intimate setting for breakfast, lunch and dinner and offers a choice of traditional Sri Lankan curry and rice and home cooked dishes. The Grand Entrance Hall also has comfortable seating and serves a menu of light meals, morning snacks and afternoon tea, while the street-front verandah is the ideal place to escape the heat of the day, enjoy a tall drink and watch the world pass by. Amangalla is well placed as the starting point for walking tours of the narrow streets, bustling squares and historic buildings of Galle Fort and, beyond the walls, of Galle Town. Further afield there are many sites of cultural, religious and natural interest ,as well as tea estates with tastings, within an easy drive.
