Amakhala Game Reserve, Eastern Cape

Recommended

The malaria-free Amakhala Game Reserve is situated in the Greater Addo area of the Eastern Cape - a mere 40 minute drive north-east of Port Elizabeth. It is a unique conservation initiative that allows animals to be re-introduced to the area where they once roamed freely.  There are 4 independently owner-managed lodges on the Reserve offering various styles of accommodation.  Game viewing covers the whole Reserve, no matter which lodge guests are staying at.

The intimate thatched Safari Lodge has 11 air-conditioned rooms and offers all the comforts of a luxurious, undisturbed retreat.  At Leeuwenbosch, The Country House and Shearer’s Lodge are beautifully converted former farm buildings surrounded by indigenous gardens, and offer between them family suites (with baby sitting services and a children’s programme), luxury en-suite rooms, and a really special honeymoon suite.  At Woodbury Lodge, guests are accommodated in five comfortably appointed stone-and-thatch sleeping lodges, each with air-conditioning, en-suite bathroom and private viewing deck.  Reed Valley Inn was once the staging post for the mail coach and now offers four comfortable rooms in the converted ancient outbuildings.  Rooms have en-suite facilities, four poster beds and many original features.

Whichever lodge guests stay at, morning and evening game drives throughout the whole Reserve are arranged by experienced rangers to suit guests' personal needs. For a change of pace, enjoy bird watching and game spotting walks along the lazy Bushman’s River, a cheese and wine boat cruise, or a sundowners canoe safari.  Visits can also be arranged to Grahamstown, Addo Elephant National Park and the Shamwari Born Free enclosures.
