The camp lies in the western Okavango Delta in a private concession bordering the Moremi Reserve amidst riverine forest, open grasslands and clear papyrus-fringed water channels. Such pristine beauty is a perfect location for the six fabulous suites which are surrounded by teak decking and furnished with antique mahogany beds, Persian rugs, sofas and armchairs upholstered in glorious fabrics, and bathrooms with copper or porcelain baths. The staff to guest ratio is four to one, champagne flows at every occasion and outstanding food is served on gleaming silver with crystal and linen. The accommodation, spectacular though it is, is only part of the magical experience; the real attraction of Abu’s Camp is exploring this heavenly corner of Africa by elephant. Each elephant is handled by a Mahout and is equipped with a comfortable padded saddle which is an excellent viewing platform for close-up views of wildlife. These dignified beasts are the ultimate 4x4. Abu’s Camp also provides superb game viewing from either vehicles, mokoros or on foot. Elephant back safaris offer many magical, memorable moments, not least the opportunity to come very close to and even mingle with the wild animals. The herds of giraffe, zebra and antelope are unconcerned by the approach of the elephant herd of which you are a privileged part.
The dining area is set on layered teak decking that winds its way around African ebony and sycamore fig trees. An expert safari chef conjures up magnificent meals, catering to all tastes and dietary requirements. Sundowners are served in the shade of these majestic and ancient trees with abundant cocktails on ice.The central mess tent and sitting rooms are the perfect place to relax in soft and comfortable chairs. A well-stocked library is available to all, with a number of reference books and beautiful coffee table books on Africa displayed. Elephants are reflected everywhere, from charming ornaments placed by the baths, to carved elephants walking down the centre of the table at dinner time.
There is no electricity at the camp and all the lights and hot water are powered by solar batteries. Therefore there are no phones, faxes, or email facilities. You can, however, use the camp admin communication facilities and recharge video camera batteries - please bring a 220v adapter for a three-pronged round plug.
A new addition to the Abu Camp experience is the Abu Private Villa. Abu Private Villa sleeps four comfortably and is the perfect venue for those wanting privacy. The villa is five minutes from Abu's Camp and is situated across the lagoon from the camp. Guests enjoy their own butler, chef and guide with exclusive use of a vehicle. Mingle with the guests at main camp or enjoy your own piece of paradise with your own private pool. No elephant activities are included. Abu Private Villa – secluded paradise for you to enjoy.
Abu's Camp is also the location of a unique Elephant Research project, led by an English PhD student, to investigate the viability of releasing elephants from a captive environment into the wild. So far 4 elephants from the Abu herd have been released, after being fitted with satellite radio collars. All are tracked on a daily basis and, to date, all are doing well. | Style | Private luxurious elephant back safari camp.
