Abu Private Villa, Okavango Delta

Recommended

Abu Private Villa is just as the name suggests – private! It offers a family or party of 4 the rare privilege of relaxing in complete and secluded luxury amidst the splendour of the Okavango Delta.

Set on the edge of a large perennial lagoon with a wide variety of birdlife and a resident school of hippos, the Villa was originally constructed as Randall Moore’s (the elephant man) private lodge in the middle of his 500,000-acre concession in the Delta. Abu Private Villa is only a five minute drive from Abu Camp (neither is visible to the other) where elephant back safaris are available. Abu Villa is built of canvas over a timber frame, providing luxury accommodation which is best described as chic-Afro-Bedouin - spacious, airy and blending harmoniously with the surrounding bush. The Villa also has its own distinctive facilities and staff, including a housekeeper, a chef and a knowledgeable private guide.

The Villa is built on an elevated teak deck. The accommodation itself consists of two large bedrooms, one with twin beds, one with a double bed and both with en suite full bathroom facilities. The dining and lounge areas are equally spacious and the sitting room boasts a well-stocked library.

Guests may cool off in a plunge pool in the heat of the day, with their favourite drink or cocktail served by the butler. The guide is at the beck and call of guests to conduct morning or evening game viewing drives or organise trips on the Okavango’s numerous seasonal waterways in a mokoro: a punt-like craft traditionally used in the Delta. The guide is also on hand at all times to inform guests of all aspects of conservation, ecology and wildlife in the Delta.

Wild game around the villa is plentiful, from the herds of lechwe, impala, tsessebe and wildebeest to the giraffe browsing on the acacias, herds of buffalo and elephants that pass close by. The predators are never very far away and guests should not be surprised to hear the thrilling nocturnal calling of the large pride of lions that has made this area its home territory, or the call of the hyenas and jackals.
